What to Do When You’re Waiting to Hear Back About a Job

One of the worst parts of the job search process is the waiting. It’s especially difficult when you know you’re in the running for a certain opportunity – and you aren’t quite sure when you’ll hear any news back.

As one of the top employment firms in South Florida, Future Force knows there are some things you should do – or continue doing – that will make the “waiting game” a little easier. Here’s a look at a few of them:

Keep On Looking.

You may be pretty certain you got the job, but you should still keep looking. Not only will doing so keep you occupied while you wait, but you might find an even better opportunity during this time. Plus, if you don’t get the job, you don’t have to switch gears and start up your search all over again. You can simply continue what you’ve been doing all along.

Don’t Succumb to Temptation.

It’s tempting to look at your email or phone every five seconds to see if there’s any news. But you’ll drive yourself crazy in the process. So just check your email and phone a couple of times throughout the day.

Practice Stress Release.

Whether you like to exercise, meditate, or garden, do something you enjoy that also relieves stress and helps you maintain a positive mindset.

Get Your Mind Off Yourself.

One of the quickest ways to get your mind off yourself is to do something that helps another person. So go volunteer at your local soup kitchen or outreach shelter. You’ll gain some important perspective in the process and perhaps the waiting won’t seem quite as bad.

Take Time for Yourself.

Between your job search and family obligations, you’re likely juggling a lot of responsibility – and stress. So be sure to take some time for yourself and maintain some balance in your life, whether it’s going to the movies, reading a good book, or starting a new hobby.

Reach Out to Your Contact.

If you’re working with a professional recruiter, reach out to him or her to ask if they’ve heard anything. That said, don’t call them everyday for an update. If it’s past the date when the hiring manager said they’d get back to you, then follow up with them. Even if the news isn’t good, it’s better to know, then to wait.
