Should You Apply for Miami Jobs If You’re Overqualified?

You’ve been plugging away at your job search for months now. You’ve submitted your resume for hundreds of openings. You’ve interviewed, but haven’t gotten any offers. Things aren’t looking good.

Perhaps you should apply for Miami jobs you’re overqualified for? After all, you’ve got plenty of experience – employers would be jumping over each other to hire you, right?

Wrong. Actually, if you apply for Miami jobs you’re overqualified for, it’s even more likely you’ll get rejected. Why? Because even though you have tons of experience, you’re perceived as simply too risky to bring on board. Employers are concerned that either:

a) You’ll jump ship the second a better opportunity comes along.

b) You’ll be bored and therefore miserable on the job because you’re overqualified.

An employer would likely rather hire an employee with little experience that they can train and know will stay with the company for a while than someone who’s overqualified.

So even though you’re frustrated with your job search, don’t get off track and apply for jobs you’re overqualified for. Instead, stay the course. Here are some tips to help you:

  • Take a targeted approach. Don’t apply for a job you know you’re not well suited for and just “hope for the best.” Only apply for Miami jobs that are a good match for your background and work experience. If you don’t, you’re not only wasting your time, but you’re also wasting the time of the hiring manager (who may remember your name when you apply for a position you’re actually a great fit for).
  • Branch out. If you’re in an industry where there simply aren’t a lot of jobs right now, then consider branching out. Research similar industries or similar positions that would lend themselves to your skill set. While you’re facing a bit of an uphill climb, you’ll have a much better shot of landing the job than if you apply for a position you’re overqualified for.
  • Network more. Time and time again, studies show that networking is the #1 way to land a new job. So if you’re not networking, start. If you are networking, ramp up your efforts.
