What to Wear to Your Office Holiday Party

It’s that time of year – the office holiday party. It’s a chance to relax and enjoy with your co-workers. But, as one of the leading employment agencies in Miami, Future Force knows the last thing you want is to be the topic of water cooler gossip because of what you wore to the event. So how can you be festive, but still appropriate? Follow these tips for a few ideas:

Don’t wear anything too revealing.

Leave the nightclub attire at home. This applies to both men and women. If your co-workers are donning their regular work clothes, then follow suit. If they’re dressing up, then avoid dress shirts or dresses with plunging necklines, or mini skirts. Remember, less is more. That doesn’t mean you can’t add some sparkle or flash, it just means to be classy.

Steer clear of tacky clothing.

Sweaters and shirts that have crystals, sequins, or other decorations are like basics this time of year. That said, avoid overdoing it with the ugly Christmas sweater, or wearing reindeer antlers or an elf costume. Remember, it’s the holidays, not Halloween. Your goal is to represent yourself as well-grounded and professional, not a crazy party animal in a Santa hat.

Dress appropriately for the venue.

If your company is having a holiday party at the local bowling alley, then jeans and a sweater are fine. However, if the event is more upscale, then wear clothing suitable for the location. Even if you don’t normally dress up for work, the last thing you want is to show up in jeans when everyone else is in cocktail attire.

Some other do’s and don’ts for your office holiday party:

  • Don’t overdo it with the alcohol. Remember, the office party is still a professional event. It’s not the right time to indulge and blow off steam by drinking too much.
  • Don’t pass up an invitation to your office holiday party. If you don’t show, it could hurt your reputation.
  • Do network with those beyond your usual work circle of friends. You probably work with the same team of people day in and out. The holiday party is an ideal time to interact with those you might not know or see regularly, like company leadership.
  • Do have fun! Companies spend a lot to reward employees with events like office holiday parties, so be sure to enjoy yourself.
