When You Don’t Get Along With a Co-Worker

Working with someone in your job in Miami you don’t get along with can be a challenge. They can impact your productivity, morale, and overall satisfaction. But considering that your on-the-job success depends, in part, on your ability to solve problems and collaborate, it’s in your best interest to try and turn the situation around. Here’s how:

Focus on the positive.

Sure, your co-worker might have some annoying traits. But they must have some positive ones, as well. Focus on those. Is your nosy co-worker really good at conducting research on competitors? Is your too talkative colleague great at putting new customers at ease? Whatever the case, try to see you co-worker’s strengths rather than weaknesses.

Talk to your co-worker.

No one likes having awkward conversations. But if you want to improve, the situation, it’s a must. Don’t just suffer in silence. After all, your colleague might not even be aware that their behavior is bothering you. So be diplomatic when confronting the situation, but don’t be quiet. Otherwise, your emotions will continue to build and you’ll end up losing your cool – which will only make you look bad.

Get to know them better.

Try to connect with your co-worker on a deeper level. You may come to find out that there’s a reason behind why they act the way they do; for instance, they may be caring for an aging parent, which is why they’re always running late and seem overly stressed lately. And maybe, rather than feeling annoyed or frustrated, instead you’ll be sympathetic and a little more patient with them.

Realize it’s ok not to like everyone.

Sometimes, we think we have to like everyone and everyone has to like us. But in reality that’s never going to happen – and that’s ok. Whatever you do, though, always keep communication professional. You don’t want to respond to their snarky comments or cutting criticism in an emotional way. It will be to your benefit in the long run, even though it may be difficult to do.
