5 Things Not to Say in a Job Interview

When you’re in the middle of a long job search, getting an interview can feel like a big win. And it is. Don’t kill your chances of advancing in the hiring process by making one of these statements:

#1: What does your company do?

For many hiring managers, this question is an automatic disqualifier. Why? Because it can be easily answered by doing a little homework ahead of time and visiting the company’s website. When you ask this question, it’s clear to the hiring manager that you didn’t take initiative and prepare and also that you’re not really interested in this job…you’re interested in any job.

#2: What are the company perks / benefits like?

Yes, you want to know about what the perks of a particular role or employer are. But don’t bring them up during an interview. Doing so makes it look like you’re only focused on the benefits, not the job. Instead, ask the hiring manager a question such as: “What makes you love working here?” If a certain perk or benefit – or lack of – is a deal-breaker, then bring it up during the offer/negotiation stage; not during your first interview.

#3: Do I have to work nights?

Or variations of these, such as: Do I have to work weekends? Or can I work from home on Mondays? Or do I have to travel for the job? These kinds of questions make you sound inflexible or like you want some kind of special treatment. That’s not the message you want to send during an interview.

#4: I can do whatever you need me to.

Sure, hiring managers want a go-getter. But no one can do anything. And this vague response will not only make it hard for the hiring manager to get a sense of how you can meet the needs of the job, but it will also make you come off as desperate. When you’re in an interview, be specific. For instance, “you need someone who can perform X role. Let me tell you about my experience with that.”

#5: Are you going to check my Facebook page?

Questions like these – including “Do you conduct drug tests?” – are going to bring your character into question. The minute you ask them, the hiring manager is mentally crossing you off the list of potential candidates. So avoid them altogether.
