Tips for a Great First Day on the Job

As one of the leading employment agencies in Miami, Future Force knows the first day on a new job can be a stressful experience, even for the most seasoned worker. The good news is that there are some steps you can take to make sure you get the most from your first day – and set the tone for many more happy, productive days ahead. Here’s how:

Plan to get there early.

When it’s a new job, you don’t know what traffic will be like or how long it will take you to get from your car to your office or work station. That’s why it’s important to leave extra early and give yourself plenty of time to arrive on the job. Plan to arrive about 10 minutes early. You don’t want to the first impression you make on new co-workers and your boss to be a rushed and frazzled one.

Smile and be professional.

During your first day, you’re going to be meeting a lot of new people. With every new contact, smile and be professional. Even if you’re more of an introverted personality, go out of your way to be friendly and to talk about how excited you are to be on the job. If your boss or co-workers offer to take you to lunch – or ask you to join them after work for drinks, go.

Take initiative.

When you’re not introduced to someone, take the initiative and introduce yourself. Shake hands, make eye contact, and let others know you’re looking forward to working with them. It sets a positive tone for the relationship ahead.

Wear the right attire.

If you’re not sure what you should be wearing, then reach out to HR or your manager ahead of time and ask. You don’t want to over- or under-dress on the first day and risk making the wrong impression.

Listen and ask questions.

Don’t expect to know everything the first day on the job. But do be ready to ask lots of questions and take notes. You’re going to have a lot of information fired at you during those first days and weeks on the job. So if you’re not clear about something, don’t be afraid to ask. Also, be ready to accept feedback and make adjustments as needed. Your goal is to demonstrate that you can be flexible and get up to speed and productive as soon as possible.
