What to Say in Sticky Work Situations, Part 1

Have you ever been stunned by what a boss says to you or how they behave? Or are you dealing with someone at work who you can’t seem to communicate with in a productive way?

Whatever the case, these sticky situations can be overwhelming because you don’t know what to say in order to handle them effectively. The last thing you want to do is alienate your boss or a co-worker, or say something that will increase the tension or put your Miami Lakes job in jeopardy.

But finding the right words is key to getting the results you want in sticky work situations. Here’s a look at 3 of them and what you can say to defuse each one. In next week’s blog posting, we’ll take a look at several more situations.

Situation #1: Your boss or a co-worker disparages you…in front of everyone.

Even though it can be tempting, don’t hurl insulting remarks back at them. You’ll only aggravate the situation and could wind up looking unprofessional. Try to keep the emotion out of it, even though it may be hard. Simply state that you disagree with what they are saying. If the insults continue, say something like “We seem to be having a problem. I’d like to talk privately.”

Situation #2: Your co-worker asks for a contribution to a charity…every week.

Being hit up by co-workers for donations is a fact of life at work these days. You may even be the one who is doing the asking at one time or another. But it can get awkward – not to mention add up quickly – if a co-worker is regularly asking for handouts. If this happens to you, say something like, “I really appreciate the opportunity to give, but I just donated to my favorite charity.” If that’s not the case, then simply state you “don’t have the funds to donate.”

Situation #3: Your co-worker complains about work and your boss…all the time.

Sometimes a co-worker may just need to vent; but when it gets to the point where they are trashing your boss and the company on a regular basis, things can get downright uncomfortable. On the one hand, you don’t want to seem un-supportive; on the other hand, your boss signs your paycheck every week and you feel a sense of loyalty towards the company. Instead, try to stay neutral. Say something like, “That’s too bad. What are you going to do about it?”
