Focusing on the Job – When You’re Facing Serious Issues at Home

Potential layoffs. Budget cuts. High gas prices. Rising food prices.

As one of Miami’s top employment firms, we understand that these issues are enough to make anyone’s blood pressure rise, let alone if you’re facing additional challenges at home, such as an illness, divorce, death of a loved one, or other problems.

What’s worse is that when you are dealing with this kind of turmoil, it can be that much harder to focus on your Miami job – which could put it in jeopardy. But there are steps you can take to get through difficult times and come out the other end. Here’s how.

This too shall pass.

First, keep in mind that many people go through hard times at some point during their careers – and it will eventually pass. Your stress or unhappiness is a temporary situation that will end.

Talk to your boss.

If you feel like issues are impacting your ability to get your Miami job done, then talk to your boss. He or she may already be wondering why you’re not acting like yourself lately. If you need to take time off of work, ask for it. If you’re dealing with a sick spouse, child or parent, or with your own illness, you may be eligible for time off under the Family Medical Leave Act.

Don’t over-share.

It’s fine if you have a close friend at work and want to go to lunch to talk privately. But don’t share your problems with anyone who will listen – not your co-workers and especially not your customers.

Seek help.

If you are facing serious issues, then you may need to get professional help. Sometimes talking with an objective professional, like a psychologist or counselor, can offer you the insight – or simply the stress relief – you need to cope with your problems and get back to working at your full capacity.

Immerse yourself in work.

Although you’re facing some problems, don’t forget that you are there to do a job for your employer, not sit around and wallow. So there may be times when you have to chide yourself by saying, “Stop thinking about that and get back to work.” But getting deeply involved in your work can actually help take your mind off some of the issues you’re facing – and some of the resulting stress. And success at work will help you feel even better about yourself!
