5 Tips for Starting Your New Job Right

It’s almost a New Year – and you’re about to start a new job. Congratulations!

But, as one of the leading employment agencies in Miami, Future Force knows that the work is just beginning. And in fact, the first few weeks on a new job can be both exciting and terribly stressful.

So how can you get off on the right foot? Here are five tips to follow:

Tip #1: Don’t zone out during orientation.

You might see orientation as a mind-numbingly boring proposition. But you’ll still likely learn something of value during it, if you pay attention. Most companies come with plenty of rules – both written and unwritten – and orientation is your chance to learn about them. So while it’s tempting to zone out, don’t. Instead pay attention, take notes, and ask questions. Your future success with your new employer may depend on it.

Tip #2: Make sure you understand expectations.

One of the biggest causes of unhappy new hires is when they don’t understand what’s expected of them. So make sure you have a list of tasks, goals, and responsibilities you can discuss with your supervisor, and that you know the deadlines for when projects are due. Also, don’t be afraid to ask questions or ask for feedback to ensure you’re on the right track.

Tip #3: Befriend a company veteran.

One of the hardest parts of starting a new job is a lack of awareness about cultural nuances. It might take a while to really get to know the company and its culture. But if you befriend a company veteran – someone who’s been there for at least a few years – you can shorten the process and get the inside scoop about the internal dynamics of the organization.

Tip #4: Get to know your colleagues.

Go out to lunch or for a drink after work with your new co-workers, so you can get to know them on a more personal level. But don’t limit your new circle of friends. Make an effort to network within the company with those that you may not work with directly. You can do this by participating in any volunteer opportunities or attending company sponsored events.

Tip #5: Observe top performers.

It usually doesn’t take long to find out who the top performers are at the company. Once you know, watch what they do and how they approach problems. You can learn a lot by studying the factors that make them so successful and then trying to emulate them.
