6 Scary Job Interview Mistakes Employers Make

As one of the leading staffing firms in Miami Lakes, we’ve seen our fair share of interviewing mistakes from candidates. But they’re certainly not alone. Plenty of employers out there make scary mistakes when it comes to hiring. What are some of the biggest? Here’s a look:

Mistake #1: Doing all the talking.

A job interview is a two-way street. You should be communicating to the candidate about the job, expectations, goals and company culture, while the candidate should be communicating to you about their background, skills, strengths and career objectives. It should be a conversation; you shouldn’t be doing all the talking.

Mistake #2: Not asking about results.

A candidate might be able to talk a great game during an interview, but if they don’t have a track record of success to tout, then they’re not saying much at all. During a job interview, make sure you ask about accomplishments and results. In other words, how did they save money, make money, save time, make time, or help their current or former employers?

Mistake #3: Winging it.

Not preparing for an interview is a huge mistake. Part of preparation includes identifying your needs, goals and the job’s performance objectives ahead of time. After all, how can you expect to find the right fit candidate for the job if you don’t really know what you need? Also, be sure to review each candidate’s resume before you interview them and highlight points on their resume you’d like to discuss.

Misktake #4: Not asking the same questions.

Be sure to ask candidates many of the same questions so you can effectively compare them once the interviewing process is done. This will provide an even playing field and allow you compare candidates equally.

Mistake #5: Not eliminating distractions.

How would you like a candidate to answer their cell phone during an interview? Chances are, you wouldn’t look too kindly on that. Likewise, candidates who see you checking email and taking calls during the interview don’t appreciate the distractions. They are giving you their full attention; return the favor and give them yours.

Mistake #6: Making decisions based on gut instinct.

Sure, your instincts will play a part in your ultimate hiring decision. However, you shouldn’t let them be the sole deciding factor in whom you choose to hire. Base your decision on facts – solicit information about each candidate based on objective interview questions, discover true fit and then see if your intuition matches up.
