Valentine’s Day Workplace Do’s & Don’ts

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner – and the perfect time to let employees know how you feel about them. But, as one of South Florida’s leading staffing services firms, we warn you to tread carefully. What you might think is a gesture of appreciation and recognition, they might interpret in a different, more personal way. Stay out of hot water this Valentine’s Day by following the tips below:

  • Do celebrate Valentine’s Day in a professional, non-offensive way. Make sure to lay the ground rules so everyone is on the same page about what is allowed and what is not.
  • Don’t give out or post any suggestive cards or flyers on the bulletin board. Even if you think they’re funny, an employee may not and could take it as a sign of sexual harassment.
  • Don’t give your employees personal gifts, such as jewelry, perfume, dinners, shows, etc. Valentine’s Day is for love and romance and giving gifts can be easily misconstrued. If you want to recognize the holiday and show your employees some appreciation, bring in a large box of chocolates for the entire office to share or take your staff out to lunch that day. Don’t single out one employee or play favorites.
  • Do let your employees leave early. After all, many probably have plans with their significant others. Even if they don’t, don’t make anyone work late. Giving the gift of time is one of the best ways to show your staff you care.
  • Don’t ever allow a manager to date a subordinate. Make sure your company has strict policies prohibiting supervisors from dating subordinates. Otherwise, a case can be made that a positive performance appraisal, or a promotion is the result of the relationship.

When it comes to the workplace, Valentine’s Day can be an awkward holiday to celebrate. If you want to steer clear of any risk, then simply don’t celebrate it and inform your staff you want to maintain an air of professionalism in the office.
