5 Steps to Better Onboarding

As one of South Florida’s leading staffing services firms, Future Force knows that a hiring mistake can cost you a lot of money. But did you know there’s something you could do to ensure the people you do hire hit the ground running in a more successful way? It’s as simple as better onboarding. Here are a few tips to help you get there:

Have an onboarding plan in place.

Before you begin the hiring process, it’s important that you have a clear picture of how you’ll onboard each new employee. What will take place during their first day on the job? What about their first week? How will you go about educating them on culture, policies, procedures, and your company in general? How will you introduce them to the team they’ll be working with? It’s important to be able to answer these questions in a general way.

Make sure the details are set up before their first day.

When it comes to the first day on the job, it can have a big impact on engagement for a new employee. That’s why it’s so important to greet them when they arrive, have their workplace ready for them, and make sure their phone and email are all set up. This sends the message that you’ve been preparing for them and are excited for them to be starting at the company.

Take it slow.

Don’t make your new hire sit through an orientation program that runs the whole day or expect them fill out paperwork for hours on end. Instead, break these more tedious aspects of your onboarding up into smaller, bite size pieces. Not only will they be more interesting and easier to sit through, but your new hires will likely learn more from them, too.

Check in regularly.

Don’t just plan onboarding events during the new hire’s first day or week. Instead, make sure you’re checking in on them regularly throughout their entire first year. These check-ins don’t have to be anything formal. Rather, they can simply be a casual conversation to ask how things are going and discuss any issues or obstacles they’re encountering.

Approach your onboarding process as a work in progress.

You might not get it right the first time. But take what you learn with each new hire and adjust your onboarding process so that you work out the kinks and can continue to refine it. Also, ask your new hires what they liked about the process and areas they thought could use some improvement. As times goes on, you can make changes that will produce a more effective and more efficient way to onboard new employees.
