Is Your New Year’s Resolution to Get a New Job? This Article is For You!

It’s a New Year and the perfect time to make a fresh start. If one of your resolutions is to find a new job in the months ahead, there are certain steps to take now, before you launch your search. Here’s what to know, so you can land that dream job, faster.

Prepare your resume.

Whether you’re a recent graduate or a senior manager, your resume is still your ticket into the hiring process. So break it out, dust it off, and start polishing it. Make sure you update all your work history, educational achievements and also add in important accomplishments. Keep in mind, the more you can include numbers that quantify your track record, the better.

Revamp your LinkedIn profile.

Once your resume is shining, make sure you refresh your LinkedIn profile. It doesn’t have to be a mirror image of your resume. However, information should align. Also, think of LinkedIn as a way to showcase more of your personality, upload work samples, provide recommendations, and bring your background to life online.

Ask your people.

Your people are your friends, your neighbors, family, old work colleagues, college classmates, and others that you know. With social media, you’re probably still in touch with your college roommate from 20 years ago. Now, it’s time to take advantage of your network and reach out. Ask if they know of any job opportunities that are a fit for you and if they’d be willing to refer you.

Network in-person and online.

Networking is still the best way to find a new job, so don’t avoid it. You can attend business mixers, join online forums, and go to your next college reunion. All of these offer opportunities to not only socialize, but connect with new people, reinforce old relationships, and find out about job possibilities.

Be ready for interviews.

Before you hit the interview circuit, make sure you’re well prepared. You’re already qualified if you got a call for an interview. Not, it’s your opportunity to stand out. So research the company, prepare answers to common questions, and make a list of questions to ask about the opportunity.

Focus on the long-term.

If you don’t find a new job in the first few weeks – or even the first few months – don’t stress. Job searches take time. The right opportunity will come along. You simply need to be patient, continue to network, and follow up on past interviews and potential opportunities.
