5 Secrets to a Successful Job Interview

Landing a job in South Florida can seem harder than ever in today’s economy. But there are steps you can take to increase your odds of acing an interview and standing out from other South Florida job candidates. Here are 5 tips to help you in your job interview.

#1. Prepare.

Learn as much as you can about the company you’re interviewing with. Find out about their history, who they serve, and their vision for the future. All these details should be available on their website. But you may also find some valuable information by simply Googling the company name and seeing if there are any news articles or reviews written about them. When you arm yourself with enough information to ask pertinent questions, you’ll show the interviewer that you did your homework.

#2. Evaluate.

Reread the South Florida job description and think of specific examples of how your experience is a match for the job’s requirements. For instance, if the job description says “The ideal candidate works well under pressure,” then think of an instance where you were under pressure to make a fast decision without a lot of information to go on, or you had a task to complete in a very limited amount of time – and you were able to achieve positive results. The more you are able to prove (through specific examples) that your background aligns with the position, the more impressed the interviewer will be.

#3. Be professional.

Make sure you dress to impress. Wear a business suit, even if you think the company has a more casual work culture. It’s always better to be over-dressed, than under-dressed. Make sure you’re on time to the interview. In fact, if you’re not sure where the company is located, then you may want to do a dry run ahead of time. Also, give yourself ample time to get there. You never know if you’ll hit bad weather or traffic. Greet the interviewer with plenty of eye contact, a firm handshake, and a smile.

#4. Ask.

A job interviewer expects you to ask questions. After all, this is your opportunity to evaluate the employer and the position, as well. So be prepared to ask questions such as:

  • Why is the position open?
  • Can you describe what a typical day would be like in this position?
  • How would you describe the company culture?
  • What is the company’s management style like?

#5. Follow-up.

Make sure you get the interviewer’s business card during the interview so you have the correct spelling of their name and contact information. Then follow up after the interview by sending along a note or email thanking the interviewer for the opportunity and re-iterating why you would be a good fit for the position.
