How to Nail Your Next Phone Interview

As one of Dade County’s leading employment firms, Future Force Personnel knows that, in today’s economy, phone interviews are becoming more and more common. They’re a useful tool for employers to screen candidates quickly and determine if a face-to-face meeting is the necessary next step.

So if you haven’t had a phone interview yet, and you’re looking for a job, it’s just a matter of time. And when it does happen to you, here are five tips to keep in mind so that you nail it:

1. Practice Your Answers.

You may not think a phone interview is as formal as an in-person one, but it’s just as important. So research some commonly asked questions ahead of time and prepare your answers. Even better, since it’s a phone interview, you can keep your notes alongside you to reference as you talk.

2. Set Up a Quiet Space.

If you don’t have a dedicated office, set up a quiet space in your kitchen or at your dining room table. Also make sure any pets or children are out of the house. Dogs barking in the background don’t make a great impression…instead you want to ensure peace and quiet. And if you’re talking on your cell phone, turn the ringer on your land line off so that you don’t get interrupted during the conversation.

3. Keep Your Resume Handy.

The interviewer will likely have a copy of your cover letter and resume with them when they’re on the phone with you, so make sure you have copies for reference, as well.

4. Take Notes.

This serves two purposes. First, you might think you’ll remember all the details the interviewer passes along to you about the job and the next steps of the hiring process. But chances are, you won’t. So take notes. Secondly, it can be easy to lose focus during a phone interview, especially if an interviewer is talking at length. Taking notes helps you stay engaged.

5. Ask for an In-Person Interview.

If you think the interview has gone well, then be bold and ask for an in-person interview. You can saying something like, “From what you’ve explained, the job sounds like a terrific fit for my skills and background. I’d love an opportunity to come into your office and tell you more about what I can do for you.” If the interviewer shies away from making a commitment, then simply inquire about what next steps are in the interview process.
