What Do Hiring Managers REALLY Mean in Job Postings?

Did you ever read a posting for a Miami Lakes job and walk away scratching your head? From “independent self-starter” to “change agent,” sometimes you’d rather throw up your hands in defeat rather than attempt applying for a position with requirements you don’t understand.

So what are some of the worst offenders when it comes to job posting lingo – and what does it all really mean? Here’s a look:

“Independent Self-Starter.”

This typically means you’ll be required to take the ball and run with it. There won’t be a lot of time and resources devoted to training you and once you are on the job, you’ll be expected to deliver results without a lot of instruction or hand holding.

“Working Knowledge of.”

When a job posting requires a working knowledge of something (for instance, a computer program), that typically means the employer expects you to have some familiarity with it and be able to perform some of its basic functions, but they’re also willing to train.

On the other hand, if the posting uses “proficient in” or “command of,” then that signifies extensive experience is required.

“Fast-Paced Work Environment.”

Deadlines are tight, hours are long, and last-minute emergencies are just part of the norm. And you’re expected to get the job done regardless of the pressure-cooker environment you’re working in.

“Detail Oriented.”

When a job requires someone who is detail oriented, it typically means there will be a lot of busy work, such as filing, typing, and sending out communications. And the employer wants to hire someone who is perhaps a bit of a perfectionist and who will check their work to ensure it’s accurate.

“Change Agent.”

This typically means a company is looking to launch, improve upon, or implement a process, service, or procedure and they need someone to spearhead the effort. That would be you. A change agent is usually someone who is passionate, has a strong vision and innovative ideas, and has the communication skills and powers of persuasion necessary to get others to “buy into” the big idea.
