What to Do When a Criminal Record is Hurting Your Job Search

As one of the top employment agencies in Dade County, Future Force knows there are all sorts of situations that can be a challenge during a job search. From getting fired to not having enough experience, these types of issues can hinder even the most aggressive job candidate.

But what about when you have a criminal record? Is there anything you can do to lessen the impact of such a big obstacle? And do you have to inform a potential employer about your past?

Chances are, they’re going to find out on their own. In fact, 73% of HR managers said they conducted background checks on candidates, according to the Society for Human Resource Management. And even if they don’t find out during the hiring process, failing to disclose your record could lead to your termination down the line should you get hired.

That said, you do have some options.

For instance, there’s a possibility your record could be expunged. This doesn’t eliminate your criminal record, but it does set restrictions on who can gain access to the information.

The only downside of this option is that you’ll likely have to consult with a lawyer in order to take advantage of it, which may get expensive. On the plus side, though, getting your criminal record expunged may help you land a great job, which makes the cost worth it.

Another option is to offset the negative with something positive. For instance, if you do volunteer work (anything from volunteering at a local charity to serving on the PTA at your child’s school), then that will go a long way in changing a hiring manager’s opinion of you. It says, “yes, I’ve made some mistakes in the past, but I’m on a much more productive path now.”

And finally, if you’ve actually served time, look into a re-entry program. These offer training and support to help former prisoners to re-enter society and the workforce. Simply search online to find one that meets your needs.
