How to Avoid Seasonal Workers Splitting During Your Busiest Time

Does your business depend on seasonal workers during the holidays?

If it does, then you’re likely well underway with the hiring process. But do you also have a plan in place for getting the most from those workers – ensuring they don’t walk off the job during your busiest week?

If you don’t, as one of the top temp staffing agencies in Miami, Future Force knows you could be putting your business at risk in the form of disruptions, slow service, and frustrated employees and customers.

To help ensure that your temporary workers hit the ground running – and help you have a profitable season, here are some tips to keep in mind:

Tip #1: Get New Hires Oriented.

You likely have a training and orientation process for full-time hires; so develop one for seasonal workers, as well. It may not be as in-depth or comprehensive, but it will help the workers feel more comfortable and in control once you’re ready for them to get to work. Otherwise, they may flounder on their very first day.

Tip #2: Go Beyond the Grunt Work.

Sure, there may be low-level tasks you need a seasonal worker to perform, but don’t let 100% of their time be devoted to grunt work. Try to teach them something of value, so they learn, gain confidence, and feel like they’re making a positive contribution.

Tip #3: Communicate on a Regular Basis.

Be sure to check in with your seasonal workers on a regular basis to make sure they know where they’re supposed to be and what they’re supposed to be doing. Some may be unlikely to speak up; but when you go out of your way to check in with them, then they’ll be more likely to voice concerns and questions.

Tip #4: Offer Your Thanks.

Just because a worker is temporary, doesn’t mean they’re not motivated by praise. So thanking them for a job well done will go a long way in ensuring they stay on the job for the full season.

Tip #5: Be Flexible About Scheduling.

You certainly have business and staffing needs; but your seasonal workers also have personal and family obligations. So be mindful when it comes to scheduling. For instance, don’t schedule a worker to close one night, and then open the next.
