Interview Tips for Hiring Temp Help

As one of the leading temp staffing agencies in Miami, Future Force knows that temporary employees are in demand. In fact, nationally, the number of temp agency workers employed in the U.S. grew to a record high of nearly 2.7 million, an increase of more than 50% since the recession ended in 2009.

But when it comes to actually hiring temp help, what approach should you take?

While the end goal should always be to find someone with the right skill set to do the job and the right personality to fit with the company, there are a few different interview questions you should ask that you wouldn’t always if you were hiring full-time.

For instance, be sure to ask:

Why are you looking for temp employment? Do you prefer a short-term assignment or a long-term one? Would you be interested in full-time employment?

Asking these kinds of questions allows you to gauge the motivation (or lack of) of the temporary candidate and to see if their goals align with your company’s needs. For instance, say you know you eventually want to hire full-time for the position, but simply want to try someone out on the job first. A candidate who isn’t interested in full-time employment is not the right fit for you.

What is your availability? What days can you work? Which hours? Is it ok if your schedule changes or do you need to always work the same shift?

You have certain scheduling needs and hiring a temporary employee who can’t meet them is pointless. So you need to ask the important questions about whether a candidate could come in on Saturday if needed, or work overtime. Otherwise, you may wind up with a temporary employee who disappoints.

Can you give me an example of how you were able to adapt to a new situation in any of your past jobs?

Flexibility and adaptability are important traits for any good employee; however, they’re even more important for a temporary employee. You need this person to be able to get up to speed quickly and become productive as soon as possible. And if they don’t do well with change or new situations, then you’re going to wind up doing a lot of handholding.
