The Worst Times to Job Hunt

Is there ever a perfect time to switch jobs? Probably not. But there are certainly some times when you should proceed with caution before making the leap. Here’s a look at a few of them:

#1: You’ve been on the job less than a year.

As one of Dade County’s top employment agencies, Future Force can tell you if you just got a new job within the last year and are already trying to move on, potential future employers may see your short tenure as a red flag. Unless you’re being asked to do something you feel is unethical, or there’s a cause for concern, try to stick it out and remain in your position for at least a year before you start your job hunt. Even then, be prepared to explain why you’re leaving your job so soon.

#2: You’re experiencing a big life change.

Job searches take up a lot of time and focus. So if you’re having a new baby, planning a wedding, going through a divorce or experiencing some other major life change, you may want to hold off on your hunt. You likely won’t have the necessary time to invest in your job search efforts, which could suffer in the long run. You also run the risk of making an emotional decision rather than a practical one.

#3: You had a bad break at work.

Everyone has been there before – a big mistake, an unhappy customer, a missed deadline. But if you’re going through a bad streak at work that seems to be lasting a while, don’t assume you should move on to a new opportunity. Instead, take some time to look at the big picture – why are you having so many issues at work and what can you do to rectify them.

Perhaps you’re bored and it’s time to take on new, more challenging assignments. Or maybe you’re overworked and making mistakes as a result. Whatever the case, don’t automatically move on until you think about the cause of the problem and whether you can solve it.

#4: You want to make more money.

There’s nothing wrong with wanting to increase your salary. But don’t let it be your sole reason for leaving if you haven’t tried to negotiate a higher salary with your boss. If you know your market value, have asked for a raise and been denied, then consider making a switch. But if you like everything about the job – except the pay – ask your current employer for more.
