7 Steps to Take Before a Job Interview

Looking for a new Dade County job? What you do before you go on an interview can actually make or break your chances of landing an offer. To ensure you’re well prepared, here’s a look at 7 steps to take before every job interview:

Several Days Before

Step #1: Start Researching

When a company comes knocking, you want to ensure you know everything you can about them. That means reviewing their website, searching for news articles on them, reaching out to anyone in your network who is employed there and checking out the company social media profiles. Get familiar with their history, clients, services, philosophy and what makes them different from the competition.

Step #2: Create Your List of Questions

The hiring manager will likely ask if you have questions. Make sure you are well prepared to ask meaningful ones. Since you already know the basics of the company, be sure to ask about the position, the culture, and the hiring manager’s next steps for filling the role.

Step #3: Examine the Job Description

Take a look at the job description and make sure you’re clear on what the Dade County job is about, the company’s needs, and why you’d be a good match.

Go through the requirements line by line and think of reasons how you’re background fits with each. Also think about your own accomplishments that are relevant to the position so you can better sell yourself during the interview.

Step #4: Practice Your Answers

You don’t know exactly what questions you’re going to be asked in a job interview. But you can bet you’ll be asked about your strengths and weaknesses, why you’re leaving your current position and why you’d be a good fit for this one. Don’t wing it. Know what key points you want to communicate ahead of time.

The Day Before

Step #5: Do a Practice Run to the Location

Even if you already know where it is, there could be construction zones along the way you’re not aware of. The last thing you want is to be stuck in traffic while trying to get to a job interview on time.

So do a practice run to the location the day before – even better if it’s around the time you’d be driving to the interview – to check conditions.

Step #6: Pick Your Outfit and Try It On

How you look can impact your confidence level. Don’t wait until the morning of the interview to put on your favorite suit only to see it has a big stain front and center.

Select your clothing ahead of time – shoes included – to ensure you’re not left scrambling at the last minute.

Step #7: Looking for the Hiring Manager on LinkedIn

You never know; the two of you may share a connection, whether it’s a person, school, or past employer. You can use that information as an ice-breaker during your job interview.
