How to Follow Up After a Job Interview

Your interview went well. But now it’s a few weeks later and you haven’t heard back. How can you follow up without going overboard and becoming a pest?

Hopefully, during your interview, you asked the hiring manager when they planned to make a decision by. If that’s the case, then it makes your job a whole lot easier. You can contact them and say something such as:

“Hi Mike, Thanks for meeting with me last week to discuss the Account Manager position. The position sounds very close to my background and interests. I know you mentioned you were planning on making a decision by last Friday. I just wanted to check in with you. I’m still very interested in the opportunity and would love to know what your timeline is moving forward.”

But what if you didn’t ask about the hiring manager’s deadline for making a decision? Simply contact them and say:

“Hi Mike, Thanks for meeting with me last week to discuss the Account Manager position. The position sounds very close to my background and interests. I wanted to follow up with you about it. I’m still very interested in the role and am hoping you can share your next steps in the process. Thanks so much!”

Whatever you do, make sure to avoid the following mistakes:

  • Rambling. Whether you connect directly, leave a voicemail, or send an email, be concise. The hiring manager is busy and you don’t want to come off as too desperate. Instead, be friendly, professional and concise.
  • Demanding answers. You’re dying to know whether you got the job. That’s understandable. What’s not is to demand the hiring manager give you an answer by a certain date or try to put pressure on them to make a decision.
  • Being overly stiff or formal. Talk to the hiring manager just like you would another colleague. Be friendly and conversational, not overly formal.
  • Not staying calm. You might be frustrated about the lack of communication. But don’t take it out on the hiring manager. If you do, you’ll lose your chance of getting the offer.
