5 Things Not to Say in Your Next Job Interview

As one of the leading employment agencies in Miami, Future Force knows the job interview could be your ticket to a new opportunity. But sometimes, out of nervousness or anxiety, you may say things that hinder your ability to land the position. What are they – and what should you say instead? Here’s a look:

#1: Please hire me.

If you’ve been searching for a new job for a while, you may start to feel desperate. However, it’s critical that you don’t let this desperation shine through during the interview. If you do come off as worried, fearful or hopeless, then the hiring manager isn’t going to want to hire you. Companies want individuals who are optimistic, positive, driven and passionate. Not those who will take any job they can get.

#2: Why should I work here?

During the job interview, a hiring manager may ask you why they should hire you. But don’t turn the tables and ask the same exact question in return. You’ll come off as rude and arrogant. Instead, if you want to know what it’s really like to work at a particular company, ask questions like “what do you like most about working here?”

#3: Why would you ask that?

Sometimes, hiring managers can ask questions that seem strange to you. For instance, “if you were a car, what kind of car would you be.” But don’t call them out on it. Instead, do your best to answer the question even if it has nothing to do with the job. When you go to a lot of job interviews, chances are, you will get asked some questions that may seem useless. But bite your tongue and avoid the sarcasm.

#4: I have an interview with your competitor tomorrow.

You may think that saying this makes you sound like you’re in demand. But actually it comes off as more of a threat – one that’s going to turn the hiring manager off. Employers want those who are focused and passionate about their opportunity. Not people who seem to be playing games.

#5: I don’t have any questions.

You aced every aspect of the interview, until the hiring manager asked if you have any questions. Don’t respond this way! Instead, always come prepared with a few questions to ask that will give you a better sense of whether or not the job and the company are a good fit for you. You’ll get the information you need, plus come across as a more prepared and enthusiastic candidate.
