Losing Top Candidates? Here’s Why

As one of the leading staffing services firms in Miami, Future Force understands there’s nothing more frustrating than finding your ideal job candidate…only to have them reject your job offer. While this situation happens to every employer a time or two, if it seems to be happening all the time at your company, then there’s a problem.

If you’re experiencing a high number of job offer rejections – with no clear reason as to why – what can you do? Here’s a look at some common mistakes you could be making and how to avoid them in the future:

#1: Your hiring process is too slow.

If your hiring process takes many months, candidates have to come back for multiple interviews, and are often left hanging with no clear answer, you’re going to lose out on the top ones. They’ll accept offers from companies who move quicker through the hiring process. That’s not to say you should speed through yours; sourcing, screening and vetting each candidate takes time. However, do consider whether there steps in the process that can be streamlined or eliminated.

#2: A poor candidate experience.

A cumbersome application process. The hiring manager conducting the interview is unprepared. They take calls and check emails during the interview. A decision is promised within days and the candidate never hears back. These are the types of situations that lead to a poor candidate experience. And if your company is guilty of them, top candidates will look elsewhere for opportunities.

#3: A weak offer.

Top candidates want more than just a good salary and benefits. However, if your offer is weak, then they know they can make more elsewhere. So before you offer an opportunity to a candidate, make sure that it’s competitive for the position and geographic location.

#4: No plan B.

Don’t focus so much on one candidate that you leave other high potential ones in the dark. Make sure you treat all your top candidates with respect and are open about next steps in the hiring process. Otherwise, you’ll make a poor impression on your second choice hire, who could reject your offer as a result.

#5: Stay in contact with your top pick.

In some cases, a top pick candidate accepts the offer…only to rethink it later on and have a change of heart. To avoid this situation, make sure you are in regular contact with them once they accept the offer. Send them a welcome basket, include them on company-wide communications, and invite them to events so they can start getting to know people.
