Keys for Success at a Job Fair

As one of the leading employment agencies in South Florida, Future Force knows that going to a job fair can be a stressful experience. There are throngs of people, an endless row of employers and a lot at stake. The good news is that if you approach the event right, it can lead to connections with potential employers and a new job. Here are several keys to a successful performance:

Be picky about your attendance.

Don’t go to every job fair within a 200-mile radius of where you live. Be selective and attend those that are related to the industry you’re working in, or would like to break into. You’ll get more value out of the experience and be able to target your search on places you really want to work.

Do your homework.

Approach the event like you would an interview. Look up the companies that will be in attendance and make a short list of those you’re interested in. Then research them online so you have the knowledge and insight to explain why you’d be a good fit.

Prepare yourself.

Be sure to bring plenty of copies of your resume to hand out to prospective employers. And don’t put them in the bottom of your bag, so you’ll have to go digging every time an employer asks for one. Keep them in hand, ready to give out.

Also, remember, you only have a few seconds to make a great first impression. So be prepared with a 30-second elevator pitch that explains who you are and what you do.

Dress for success.

This should go without saying. But dress like you’re going to a job interview. That means no jeans and t-shirts. Don’t let sloppy or too casual attire impact your ability to find a great job.

Don’t be shy.

If you’re not an outgoing personality, the thought of going up to a booth and striking up a conversation with a recruiter can be daunting. But that’s the whole point of these job fairs – to make new connections and learn about job openings. And you can’t do that if you don’t dive right in.

Re-connect with your favorite employer.

If you talked to an employer you’re really interested in, circle back to them at the end of the job fair. This is a time when the crowds will be thinned and you may be able to talk in more detail about the job opening and reiterate your interest. If not, then ask for a business card and be sure to follow up soon after the fair.
