A Five-Step Vetting Process to Hire Successful Referrals

When you need to hire, one of the fastest and most effective ways is by getting referrals from your existing team. When you do, what steps should you take to ensure those referred to you are high quality and a good match for your company?

As one of Dade County’s top staffing agencies, Future Force has the answers you need. Here’s a look at an easy five-step vetting process you can take today to ensure your referrals are successful new hires tomorrow:

Step 1: Phone Screen

Before you bring the applicant into your office for a full, hour-long interview, conduct a quick phone screen first. That way, you can introduce yourself and assess their interest in the job. You can also ask some questions that will help you determine whether they’d be a good fit for the role.

Step 2: Interview

If the phone screen goes well, bring the applicant in for an interview. That way, you can meet them in person, tell them more about the opportunity and dig deeper into their background and abilities. They’ll also get a chance to ask more questions to find out whether your opportunity is the right match for them.

Step 3: Skills Testing

Once it seems like you’ve found a high-quality applicant, it’s important that they undergo skills testing. This will give you peace of mind that they have the abilities you need and there aren’t any surprises once they’re on the job.

Step 4: Reference Verification

If their skills test well, then move onto the verification process. This should include calling three to five professional references to check for details, such as job titles, length of employment, and tasks and responsibilities. You should also discuss strengths and weaknesses of the applicant, and ensure what they told you matches up with what the references have to say about them.

Step 5: Background Check

In addition to verifying references, you should also perform a background check to review a candidate’s criminal record, validate their Social Security number and address, and look for any other red flags that could potentially indicate a hiring mistake.

If all comes back clear, it looks like you’ve found a great new hire. Congratulations! If not, though, and you’d like some help sourcing and vetting candidates, turn to the team at Future Force.
