Your Daily Checklist for Properly Maintaining Personal Protective Equipment

Staying safe on the job involves more than simply having the right PPE to protect you. It’s also critical that you properly maintain it. Otherwise, it will fall into disrepair and won’t work as well, potentially putting you in harm’s way in the process. To ensure that doesn’t happen to you, here are some steps to take to maintain your personal protective equipment:

Hands and feet.

Make sure your gloves and footwear are kept clean and dry. It’s also important to check them regularly for holes, cracks, tears or other damage that could cause you harm if not replaced. For your gloves, it’s also important to keep a backup pair just in case the ones you typically use get damaged during your workday.

Eyes and ears.

Your eyes and ears need special protection to keep them safe from harm. For your eyewear, make sure it’s always clean so you can see clearly out of it. Simply use soap and water with a washcloth to avoid any scratches. Also store it in a case that’s dust-proof so the lenses stay as clear as possible. If there are any scratches or damage, replace them immediately.

For your hearing protection – whether it’s ear muffs or earplugs – make sure they’re clean and also stored in a cool, dry place. If the cushions on your earmuffs feel like they’re losing some of their resilience, replace them as soon as possible.

When it comes to your hard hat, it’s vitally important to make sure it’s clean, dry and not worn or cracked in any way. When you’re not using it, you should store it in a place that’s cool and dark, not in full sun, otherwise it can get damaged. In addition, regularly check that the headband is properly fitted and not worn out, so it conforms well to your head, offering the best protection in the process.

Your respirator should be cleaned and disinfected on a regular basis. When doing so, make sure you follow the manufacturer’s directions. Also examine it before every use for any damage, such as holes or cracks, that could cause a problem. When you’re not using it, make sure you store it in a place that’s protected from extreme temperatures, as well as moisture and light.
