How to Bring Up Sensitive Topics in a Job Interview

Pay. Benefits. Travel. Flex schedules. Telecommuting.

If the job posting doesn’t spell out information about these all-important subjects, then you’re likely dying to know the details of each.

At the same time, though, you know you’re not supposed to ask about pay and benefits out of the gate…in the first five minutes of the interview. But really, wouldn’t it be a lot easier if you had the answers ahead of time, so you knew whether you even wanted to apply for the job in the first place?

Alas, as one of Miami’s top employment firms, Future Force knows most employers don’t want to give up the goods until they’re ready. Plus, you don’t want to look like you’re just focused on the money.

However, there is a way to broach these sensitive topics in the beginning of your relationship with a potential employer. And it’s really in the best interest of both parties you do so, so neither wastes their time if the job offer isn’t a good fit.

It’s all about timing and being tactful.

Obviously, when you have an interview set up with a hiring manager, you shouldn’t ask “so what’s the pay?” in the first two minutes.

However, if you’ve talked for a while and think the opportunity sounds promising, then inquire about salary and benefits toward the end of the interview, when the hiring manager asks you if you have any questions.

For instance, you can say something like:

“The position sounds great and from the research I’ve done, I’d love the chance to work for your company. However, I am actively interviewing with other companies and want to compare apples to apples in terms of compensation. In light of that, would you be able to share details about salary and benefits?”

Keep in mind, that these subjects are sensitive. So asking about them in the wrong way – too early, or being forceful – can leave a bad taste in the hiring manager’s mouth.

However, if you time it right and are tactful and reasonable, you can get the information you need without having a negative impact on your chances of landing the job.
