Do Your Holiday Parties Hurt Productivity?

If you’re like most employers, chances are, they do.

Consider the facts. According to a recent study by Harris Interactive of more than 2,000 American workers:

  • 64% of respondents said they either called in sick or knew someone who did so in order to nurse a hangover after a company holiday party.
  • Furthermore, approximately half of workers who actually did show up the next day said they were too hungover to work or knew someone who was.
  • In addition, 55% of workers said they mentally “checked out” of work the day after a holiday party, impacting their productivity as a result.

Clearly, holiday parties do have an impact on productivity…and it’s not good. So what can you do to spread the holiday cheer, while at the same time ensure your staff gets their work done?

Here are a few tips to consider:

Host a Luncheon.

Rather than hosting a huge holiday cocktail party, host a luncheon instead. Not only will you not have to serve alcohol, but your employees won’t really expect you to since it’s a daytime party. While you will have some lost time to deal with during the workday, at least your staff won’t be hungover the next day.

Host Your Party on a Friday Night.

Not only will you avoid mid-week disruptions, but if an employee drinks too much, at least they’re hungover on their own time.

Communicate Appropriate Behavior Ahead of Time.

Encourage your employees to take responsibility for their behavior and to keep their alcohol consumption to a minimum. However, in order for them to do so, you need to lead by example and do the same.

Give Employees Ideas on How to Cope With Stress.

With the stagnant economy and rising cost of living, high stress is a fact of life for many workers these days. And when you throw holiday stress into the mix, it’s enough to make an employee go off the deep end at a holiday party and indulge too much. To help ensure they don’t, offer your staff ideas on how to cope with stress in a healthy way during the holidays.
