Inside Scoop on Recruiting: 5 Things Job Candidates Need to Know

As one of Dade County’s top employment agencies, Future Force knows that searching for a new job can be like navigating a minefield. Not only is it highly stressful, but one wrong move can knock you out of the running for a job.

But, as the saying goes, “knowledge is power.” So to help ensure you’re as informed as possible about the recruiting process, here are a few little-known recruiting secrets most job candidates aren’t aware of – and that you should know:

#1. Sometimes a job isn’t really open.

Due to certain legalities, an organization may have to publicly post a job opening, even though they’re going to hire from an internal pool of candidates. This can be an especially frustrating experience because you have no way of knowing which jobs are “real.”

#2. A human may never see your resume.

More and more companies are relying on resume screening software in order to filter out bad candidates. And if your resume doesn’t use keywords from the job post or if it’s not formatted a certain way, a hiring manager may never actually see it.

#3. A hiring manager may keep your resume on file, but will likely never look at it.

The primary reason they keep resumes on file are legal, not to access them when they have new job openings. So if you applied for a position at a company, were rejected and told they’d keep your resume on file, be sure to apply again if a new position with the same company opens up.

#4. You’ll probably never know why an employer didn’t hire you.

In today’s litigious society, a rejection letter is designed to avoid legal claims, not to help job candidates find out why they didn’t get the job or improve upon weaknesses. So if you get a letter or email stating the employer “went in another direction,” then there could be myriad reasons why they really didn’t hire you.

#5. The smallest issue can land your resume in the recycling bin.

Your background, experience, and personality may all be a great fit for the organization, but even the smallest, yet seemingly unrelated issue, could negatively impact your chances of getting the job. Live an hour away from an employer, for instance? The employer may reason that you’ll get sick of the commute and may not interview you as a result.
