Talking to Your Boss About Overtime

Working overtime can be a challenge for many people today. However, if you’re one of the few who wants more hours, how can you ask your boss? Below are some tips to keep in mind:

Set up a private meeting.

This isn’t the kind of conversation you want to have over the water cooler. Instead, set up a private time when both you and your boss can meet in a quiet place, and you can discuss with them the opportunities for overtime.

Explain why you want more hours.

If there’s a particular reason you want to work more hours, then explain why. For instance, if you’re saving up to purchase a home or are starting a family, then your boss will be more likely to grant your request. However, if you already seem stretched thin, they could turn you down.

For instance, in your conversation, you can say something like:

“I just wanted to let you know I’m available to work more hours and take on additional shifts, anytime. I’m saving up to buy a car, so I don’t have to take the bus to work anymore. Do you think there’s any overtime available?”

Put it all in writing.

If your boss does agree to your request for overtime, make sure you get it in writing. Generally, companies have policies where overtime has to be approved. However, it’s important to ensure you’re both clear on the details, such as how many more hours you will be working and what your overtime rate will be. This way, there won’t be any surprises for you or your employer in the future, and it will be a positive experience for both.

Let them know you’re open to more hours in the future.

If you get turned down for overtime, don’t take it personally. There likely isn’t room in the budget to pay employees additional hours. However, let your boss know you’re open in the future. When additional shifts come up, you’ll be top-of-mind and the first one they call.
