Why Staying Geographically Flexible May Help You Get a Job You Want

When you’re looking for a new job, you want the best-fit position that’s closest to where you live. However, sometimes that’s hard to find. If you’ve been hunting for a while with limited success, what can you do? It may be time to expand your search. Here’s how:

Open up your job search parameters.

When you’re searching for a job online, you often have to enter in the location you’re interested in. However, this can limit the results you’re seeing. There might be an opportunity that’s a perfect fit for you, just a few miles outside of the filters you set. It’s why you should expand your search to look beyond the exact community where you want to work.

For instance, if you’re looking for jobs in Miami and using that location in your search, then you’re not going to see positions in Hollywood or Coral Springs. It’s why, when you’re online looking for jobs, you should increase your search radius by five to 10 miles. You’ll be surprised by the different opportunities that show up when you open up your search parameter, even by just a few miles.

Consider relocating to a different area.

If there’s an ideal job that’s an hour away, consider whether you’d be willing to move for it. Are you in an apartment or do you own a home? How would this impact your spouse or partner, or your children? If you have some flexibility, then being open to relocating for a job can open up a whole new world of possibilities. If that’s the case, start researching some communities you’d be interested in, then look for jobs in those areas.

Evaluate your commuting time.

Ideally, the perfect job will be just around the corner. However, that’s often not the case. So if a great job comes along, but the commute is a little longer than you’d like, do a test drive. Drive out to the location on different days, during various rush hours and get a sense of what your commute would truly be like. If it will be taking away from your quality of life, it’s not worth it. If it’s do-able, though, then the job is worth considering.
