First Day on the Job? 5 Ways to Put Your Best Foot Forward

The job search is stressful. However, the anxiety doesn’t end once you land a position. Those first days and weeks in a new role can also be nerve-wracking. How do you approach them and ensure you’re making a great impression? Here are five ways:

1. Nail the basics.

This includes arriving on time, dressing appropriately, and being prepared with any documentation you were asked to bring. Also, make sure you know whom you’re supposed to meet and how to get to your new office or workplace, so you don’t waste time searching around on your first day. Go the extra mile arriving early, staying late, and volunteering to help out where needed, so you show your new team you’re committed to the company.

2. Reconnect with those you met while interviewing.

During the interview process, you likely met a host of people. Reach back out to them and let them know you started in the position and to thank them for their time during the hiring process. This is a great way to break the ice and to launch new friendships and work relationships, which are key to job performance and satisfaction.

3. Get to know your manager.

Your manager is going to be your go-to person for goals, expectations, questions, concerns, and more. So get to know them during those first days and weeks on the job. It’s important you understand clearly what they need from you, as well as ask questions about how they prefer to be communicated with and how often they want progress reports and updates. This will help to ensure you’re meeting their expectations from the get-go.

4. Learn about your new employer.

Beyond your boss and co-workers, it’s important to learn as much as you can about your new employer, the organizational structure, the culture, and policies and procedures. Read through the employee manual, review the website, ask questions, and determine who the key players are at the company. The more you learn, the more you’ll see where you fit in and how to make critical contributions that will impact the team.

5. Speak up.

If you have a question or concern, or a new idea or perspective, be sure to offer it. There’s a reason the company hired you, and it’s important that you show you’re willing to share ideas. Ask lots of questions, listen and learn, and also speak up so you’re contributing your own thoughts and opinions.
