Question Time: What Are You Passionate About?

Before the interview process, you’re probably preparing for questions related to past work duties and accomplishments. But are you ready to talk about what you’re passionate about?

If not, don’t hope this doesn’t get asked and wing it if it does. Instead, prepare for the question ahead of time, so you can ace the answer and make the best impression on the hiring manager.

Why do hiring managers ask this question?

It’s simply because they want to gain more insight into what drives for you. This, in turn, will help them understand how you’re motivated, so they can determine whether you’re the right fit for their culture and their leadership team. It also helps them to determine whether your larger goals and things that inspire you are align with their mission and vision of the company.

How do you best answer it?

When it comes to talking about what your passionate about, pick something that is genuine. Never say what you think the hiring manager wants to hear. Otherwise, you won’t come off as honest or authentic.

You can choose something that is related to work and your career, whether directly or indirectly. For instance, perhaps you have a passion for reading industry publications and make it your mission to stay in-the-know about the latest trends and challenges so that you can prepare for them in your job. Or maybe you’re a runner who has completed multiple half and full marathons and love the discipline and goal-setting that comes with this past time.

What are some examples?

To give you an idea of how to answer this question, here’s an example:

“I’m passionate about people. I am what you would call a ‘people person’ and love interacting with others, solving their problems, and building relationships with them so that they’re happy. In fact, I take pride in the fact that some of my clients in my past position have been with me for the entire duration of my career there. I think that tells you something about their satisfaction not only with my company’s offerings but with the way, I have worked hard to serve them.”
