Before your big interview, you’re likely preparing for some common questions. One of them is often along the lines of “why do you want to work for us?”
This can be tricky to answer because you might not know a lot about the company or its culture. So why does the hiring manager ask it? For a few reasons.
They’re trying to assess whether you’d be a fit for the role and the organization, whether you’re truly interested in their opening, and if your goals and priorities are right for the team. You meanwhile might not have a lot to go on to persuade as them as to why you want to work there. So what should you do?
For every organization you interview with, you still need to have an answer ready. To prepare one, take the following steps from our team at Future Force, one of the area’s top office staffing agencies:
Start with the job description.
Take a look at the job description. There’s a reason you applied to the role and it all starts there. What stood out to you? What did you find compelling or intriguing? What do you want to know more about? What have you heard about the company since you applied? These are all good starting points to put together details on how to answer this question.
Research the company.
Read through the company website. Pay particular attention to any press releases or news articles, as well as the company blog. This is dynamic content that is ever-changing and will give you the most recent information on the organization. When you do, you’ll have a better sense of what is attractive to you.
Focus on one aspect.
After you’ve done some legwork, you should be able to start formulating a response. As you do, focus on just one aspect. You don’t want to deliver a long-winded or confusing answer. You simply want to offer the best and most compelling reason as to why you want to work there. This can include:
- Reputation
- Key leaders on the team
- Interest in the products or services
- Alignment with core values and culture
- Company growth and success
Avoid common mistakes.
Once you have a solid answer, just make sure it’s not too-general. While it’s easier, don’t give the same answer for every company you interview with. Taking time to craft a compelling and completely unique response to this question will make you memorable and increase your chance for getting an offer.
If, however, you sound generic or unenthusiastic about the job, the hiring manager will perceive that as lack of interest. It’s why honing the right response is so important.
Here’s a sample:
“The reputation of ABC Firm is a huge factor in wanting to work here. Obviously, your organization is the clear leader in the industry and I’d be thrilled to be a part of such a renowned organization. I feel I could contribute valuable skills to the team, such as A, B and C, but at the same time, learn and grow with the team, which is why I’m so excited about this opportunity.
