Didn’t Get the Job? Follow These Next Steps

Didn't Get the Job? Follow These Next Steps | Future Force Personnel

There’s nothing more discouraging than finding out you didn’t get a job you really wanted. While it’s ok to take a minute and process the rejection, don’t wallow in it. Instead, learn from it, so you can fix any mistakes you made and impress the next hiring manager you interview with. Here are some ways to do that.

What to Do if You Didn’t Get the Job

Reflect on the interview

Was there a time during the interview where you knew you didn’t respond in the best way? Or you felt nervous and stumbled, as a result? These are the moments that are important to reflect on and learn from. Also, think about the points during the interview where you felt you gave a strong response or impressed the hiring manager. Write down everything that did go well, so you remember to repeat it next time you have an interview.

Ask for feedback

Not every hiring manager will offer you feedback. However, it’s worth it to ask in a professional way. If they sent you an email – letting you know you didn’t get the job – then simply reply to it.

First, thank them for their time, stating you enjoyed meeting them and wishing them the luck with their hiring choice. Then, ask if there’s any feedback they can offer as to why you didn’t get the job. You might get a generic response, or you could get some valuable insight that can help you improve your interview performance in the future.

Here’s what you can say:

“I was just wondering if there was anything I could do to improve my chance for securing a similar job in the future? I value your opinion and would truly appreciate any feedback you could provide.”

Stay calm and professional

If you get negative feedback, don’t get defensive and upset, responding in an unprofessional way. Simply take it in stride, thank them for their feedback and move onto the next opportunity. You never want to burn bridges with a hiring manager because you don’t know when you will cross paths again.

Keep looking for a new job

The best way to recover from job search rejection is to keep up with your hunt for a new opportunity. Set weekly goals for the number of jobs you will apply to, how many networking events you will attend, and which employers you’ll follow up with. Having a plan in place and moving forward with it will help to soften the blow if you didn’t get a job you wanted.
