How to Craft the Perfect Elevator Pitch

Searching for a new job? One critical task is preparing for interviews and questions like, “tell me more about yourself.” Trying to summarize your career, your goals, and why you want the job can be tough – if you don’t practice. But by creating an elevator pitch, or a  30-60 second introduction that summarizes who you are and what you do, answering questions like these just got easier.

To help you create that perfect elevator pitch, here are a few tips to follow.

Be distinct.

Your elevator pitch should be unique to you. It shouldn’t sound like everyone else’s. One way to do that? Tell a story or offer an example of a memorable project or achievement you earned. When you add in unique details about your background, you will make yourself more memorable and more marketable as a candidate. You’ll also pique the interest of others, so they want to learn more about you.

Customize your approach.

When you’re talking to a hiring manager, take a tailored approach to your elevator pitch. This can include adding in a detail or two that is more relevant for the particular company.

For instance, if you know they are having a specific pain point or challenge, discuss your experience with solving a similar problem. This will resonate more with your audience and help you to stand out from other candidates.

Keep it simple.

Your elevator pitch should not be a lengthy diatribe. Keep it short and simple. The best way to do that? Editing. Write out your elevator pitch and keep refining it until it’s as concise as possible. Follow the template of 1) describing a problem or objective, 2) the action you took to hand it, and 3) the positive outcome you were able to achieve.

Practice your pitch.

When you practice your elevator pitch, you’ll get more comfortable with it. It will sound more natural and it will be easier to deliver it, whether you’re talking to a hiring manager or a new contact at a job fair. Practicing ahead of time with a family member or friend is usually a good way to make sure your pitch is effective and check for issues, like talking too fast or rambling.
